By the River with Tiina & Atte

There's something special in families and wedding parties that stay in the same house for one or even more days before the wedding day. And not just for rehearsal-dinner-type-of-traditions. And where the old boarded floor feels like during an earth quake when dancing goes upbeat. Once again Finnish summer showed its very best in Huittinen (venue Wanha Pappila) and Sastamala (15th Century Church called Pyhän Marian kirkko) with this adorable young couple.

Countryside Wedding with Henni & Ville

Ostrobothnia is the province where I was born and raised. So I was happy and excited to shoot Henni and Ville's wedding there last summer. This "Texas of Finland" is known for its flat land and endless fields and therefore perfect for countryside portraits and traditional yet informal and relaxed wedding day. The Finnish summer at its best!

From Storm to Sunshine - Fanny & Matti

Fanny and Matti’s first look moment might have been the windiest ever. But it didn’t lack emotion. Their wedding was celebrated completely on Uunisaari island, Helsinki. The stormy rain forced us to stay in the transporter boat during the original portrait session. But boats have always played big role in this couples’ life as they have shared passion for sailing, so maybe this was meant to be! Later we were lucky enough to witness a complete change in weather. So we were able to capture portraits also without an umbrella. And the lovers did their first dance among sun rays. So the day just kept on getting better and better like a good story should. Simply beautiful.

Classy and intimate with Saija & Niko

Saija & Niko celebrated their wedding as an intimate family dinner including an outdoors ceremony. They kept all aestethics Nordic style simple and minimal, yet stylish, which gladdened my soul a lot. And look at them! How beautiful can a couple be? The location where everything took place, Mustion Linna, becoming one of my new favourites, was one hour drive west from Helsinki, Finland.

Sand Between the Toes - Minna & Marko

Wedding ceremony on the beach. Sunshine. Warm. On this lovely day in August we were extremely lucky with Minna and Marko! In Finland we never have any certainty of how the weather is gonna turn out to be even during summer weeks. So we don't take any given summer days for granted! Hanko, the southest city in Finland, showed its best. While I was shooting portraits with the super-relaxed couple, the guests were kept entertained with aperitif cocktails and photo booth with my second shooter Ville. The venue was a rental warehouse near the harbor which had been decorated super moody by friends & family.

So what I learned:

  • Everyone should have a chance to capture portraits bare feet
  • Why set a drawing table for kids when you can make their dining table serve for this purpose!
  • Having one of the most famous chefs of the nation in your family can't be a bad thing. This time it meant shared dishes of delicious mixed Asian food
  • The guests were given a thoughtful present to take home after an all-niter: a water bottle with painkiller pills and others. Could you guess we had a doctor bride!

And as idyllic the day was, it was natural to see some fireworks action late in the evening. The show was part of totally different celebration, but why not own it when you can!

All you need is an island – Senja & Chris

We spent almost the whole wedding day on an island (Hotel Hanasaari, Espoo, Finland) with super-lovely couple Senja and Chris. From preparations, first look, portrait session to the reception, only visiting the Old Church of Helsinki (Helsingin vanha kirkko) for ceremony. On an island it's all about the sea, so we let it show on the portraits. I never get tired of marine atmosphere anyway! And later in the evening we were lucky enough to enjoy and capture a colourful sunset too. It was a Swiss-Finnish wedding with some Swedish traditions added. And there were guests present with almost 20 different nationalities, so that's something you could call international!

Bridges, balloons & a party Limo in Vantaa - Jennika & Mika

When your own home is lovely, picturesque and well located, why not do all bridal preparations there? One of the most popular churches around (Pyhän Laurin kirkko, Vantaa) served for the wedding ceremony. And reception was held at Restaurant Kuninkaan Lohet (former Vantaan Viilatehdas). Has this been a hidden gem or is it gaining popularity as a wedding venue since I spent there two days this summer and I hadn't even heard about the place before. But now I love it! Surrounded by idyllic peaceful natural areas for portraits and look at that dinner buffet table! This was one of the blissful days where nothing on Earth could stop the bride and the groom from smiling, relaxing and just enjoying the flow of the day. Best!
